บทคัดย่อ (EN): Sixty years ago poultry production in Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand was totally based on the use of the indigenous chicken breeds for both meat and egg production. About two to three decades after that medium to large-scale poultry industry, has been successfully introduced into this region. The exotic breeds and hybrid chickens have pushed out the indigenous chickens from the commercial poultry production. However, the indigenous chickens maintain their survival stronghold in the integrated smallfarms, in which chickens remain an integral part of the integrated crop-livestock smallfarm systems. Traditional rural cock fighting is a significant major social factor that plays the conservation role of the indigenous chicken breeds. The special quality of the indigenous chicken meat such as smell, taste, and chewiness of the meat as generally accepted by consumers has caught the attention of some commercial producers. But most of the indigenous chicken populations remain on rural farm households. This paper is intended to explain why most small farmers in developing countries in Southeast Asia keep some numbers of chickens on their farms, and the roles and impacts of the indigenous chickens on rural farm community. Some reasons why rural farmers keep indigenous chickens. Husbandry aspects, e.g. - Local breeds, both male and female, are commonly available. - Feeds are available from natural sources, household wastes, and farm wastes and by-products, etc. - Native chickens are good scavenger and free-range animal. - They are more disease resistant as compared with exotic breeds. - They are naturally most adaptable to climatic and ecological conditions. - Brooding, hatching, and rearing of the chicks are naturally done by the hens, with relatively high percentages of chick survival. Economic and socio-cultural aspects, e.g. - Great demand for indigenous chicken meat. - 30-50% higher price for meat as compared with commercial broiler. - Providing family savings in case of needs for emergency cash. - The game of cock fighting has been a very popular traditional sport for rural people. A very good fighting cock could fetch a price of upto US$ 2,000 to 4,000. This is the single most important factor that contributes to the conservation and survival of the indigenous chickens. - Women, children, and old folks can easily take care of chickens whenever extra cares are needed, for instance for feeding, vaccination, or parasite control. Chickens provide manure for soil fertility, and feed on insects and parasites to reduce some animal and crop pests. Crop by-products such as rice bran and broken rice can be used efficiently as supplementary feeds. Hence, chickens become an appropriate and integral part of the integrated farming systems, and contribute to the sustainability of smallfarm agriculture. The performances of village chickens such as egg production or body weight can be improved through “better” management and feeding, however, it needs to make sure that the improved methods of management and feedings will not reduce the desired meat qualities generally accepted by the consumers. Greater knowledge about the meat qualities of indigenous chickens also needs more scientific research.
