บทคัดย่อ (EN): Waste water generated during the processing of natural rubber latex into Ribbed Smoked Sheets (RSS) contains substantial amount of organic compounds, leading to environmental pollution, particularly emission of greenhouse gases like methane and CO2 when disposed untreated. Treatment of water to bring down the excess pollution parameter to the tolerance limit is mandatory prior to disposal to environment. In view of this an integrated waste water treatment system was designed, installed and evaluated in a RSS group processing centre. The treatment system consists of primary, secondary and tertiary treatments. The primary treatment includes floor wash collection, coagulation, filtration and equalization. The secondary biological treatment system is specially designed with a High Rate Anaerobic Methanogenic Reactor (HRMR) and a diffused aeration system. Both pressure sand and activated charcoal filtration are the components of the tertiary treatment system. The IWWTS was evaluated initially for three years during the experimental period and for another one year during the actual operational period at the RSS processing centre, by analyzing samples collected from various points of treatment with respect to the pollution parameters. The IWWTS could achieve removal efficiency in BOD – 99.48%, COD-98.63%, TS & DS – 81.50%. The pH increased from 4.7 in the untreated effluent to 6.6 in the treated water. All the pollution parameters in the treated final water were within the safe limits for discharge to the environment. The overall Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) for treatment of RSS processing waste water in the present IWWTS was 48 hrs, at an effluent inflow rate of 5 m3/day. The HRMR yielded 8 m3 biogas/day. The biogas was used as fuel for burning in the smoke house to generate heat for sheet drying with a saving of 35-50% in firewood use. Capturing and utilization of biogas rich in methane is step towards mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions in the primary processing of NR latex.
