บทคัดย่อ (EN): A case study was undertaken to compare the soil properties and rubber growth and yield in two differently managed mature rubber systems with respect to weed management. The study was undertaken in fields located in the village, Pathampuzha near Palai in Kottayam district. Kerala state, India. Planting in these fields were carried out during 1990-1996 period. All the fields were planted with clone RRII 105 with a spacing of 22’ X 11’. Leguminous cover crop Mucuna bracteata was established in all the fields in the initial years itself. The cover crop existed for about six years and later on other weeds slowly proliferated. Nutrient additions in the form of chemical fertilizers were similar in all the fields under both systems during the initial six to seven years. Afterwards, the weed and nutrient management practices changed. In one set of eight fields, weed control and nutrient additions through chemical fertilizers were continued, while in the other set of eight fields the weeding was restricted to narrow strips in the platform, for the crop harvesting personnel to move around and no fertilizer inputs were made. These practices were continuing while the study was made in 2011. Soil samples were collected from five randomly selected sites at three depths (0-15, 15-30 and 30-45 cm) from each field and analysed for nutrient contents. Annual dry rubber yield of each field also recorded. Moisture status of soil was recorded at two depths viz., 0-15 and 15-45 cm. It could be noticed that during the summer period soil moisture status at 0-15 and 15-45 cm depths were significantly higher in fields where under-flora was not controlled. Organic carbon, total nitrogen and available forms of potassium, magnesium, iron and manganese were significantly higher in all the three layers of soil in fields where under-flora was not controlled. In the 0-15 cm layer, available calcium was more in fields where under-flora was not controlled while it was less in 30-45 cm layer compared to the weed controlled fields. Yield data indicated that, by allowing the growth of under flora in mature rubber plantations, rubber yield was not declining. A management system where moisture status and nutrient contents improve without compromising on rubber yield would be a better agricultural management option.
