บทคัดย่อ (EN): Scarcity of skilled latex harvesting assistants was identified as one of the major reasons which affect the sustainability of the rubber smallholder sector in Sri Lanka. Hence, establishment of Training Schools for Latex Harvesting Assistants (TSLHAs) in rubber growing areas is the extension strategy introduced by the Rubber Research Institute of Sri Lanka (RRISL) to overcome this issue with the intention of introducing technically skilled personnel to perform latex harvesting according to the recommendations of the RRISL. Systematic training through the TSLHAs was initiated in 2010 with the aim of enhancing the knowledge, skills and adoption of latex harvesting recommendations. Subsequently, a case study was conducted to evaluate the TSLHAs and gather perceptions of both trainees and trainers for further improvement in the efficiency and effectiveness of TSLHAs. Sixty trainees and twenty trainers were evaluated using a questionnaire on theoretical and practical aspects gathered during TSLHAs and field level observations. The level of knowledge, skills and adoption in harvesting recommendations of trainees were measured by scales. Descriptive and non-parametric statistical methods were employed in the study. Sixty-three percent of the sample comprised female harvesting assistants. The outcome of the TSLHAs found to be a significant improvement in technical knowledge, skills and adoption of harvesting recommendations,from 38 % to 90 %, 41 % to 89 % and 23% to 81% respectively. Insufficient time allocated for practical sessions and for sharing experience with other trainees and trainers were identified as main constrains by both trainees and trainers during training sessions and therefore, suggestions for improvement of TSHLHAs are discussed.
