บทคัดย่อ (EN): This study showed the effect of slow release fertilizer (SRF) on performance of a three-whorl polybag rubber grown on hilly terrain in Ladang Felda Lawin Tengah, in the state of Perak, Malaysia. The rubber clone planted was PB 350 at a density of 500 trees per hectare. Two rates of SRF, T1 and T2 were tested. The SRF was placed in the planting hole at time of planting as the first application. For the second application it was buried under the soil at six months after planting. Hereafter, the fertilizer was applied twice a year until the trees reach maturity. Mixture fertilizer was used as the control and it was broadcasted at the rate and frequency recommended by Felda Plantations Sdn Bhd. The only growth parameter taken was girth measurement. It was measured at the height of 60cm above the ground level in the first eighteen months and 150cm thereafter. The first girth measurement was taken at seven months after planting and subsequent measurements were taken at four months interval. Results showed that girth increment for SRF were consistently higher than the control. After 36 months of planting, the cumulative girth increments from trees in the SRF plots for T1 and T2 were 20.92 cm and 20.73 cm respectively compared to 16.77 cm for the control. The percentage increments over the control were 24.8% for T1 and 23.6% for T2. This showed that the performance of a three-whorl polybag rubber planting using SRF is better than the mixture fertilizer. The number of fertilizer applications for SRF was eight and sixteen rounds for the control during the period of the study. The total costs of fertilizers per hectare for three years were RM1340.00 for T1 and RM2680.00 for T2, while for the mixture fertilizer it was RM1200.00. The use of labor in relation to manuring was lower in SRF area than the conventional fertilizer. The total labour costs for manuring per hectare for SRF were RM150.00 and RM225.00 for the conventional fertilizer. The SRF tested is a suitable fertilizer for immature rubber grown on hilly terrain taking into consideration the current scenario of labor shortage faced by the rubber industry in Malaysia.
