บทคัดย่อ (EN): Pasture research commenced in the hills of northern Thailand in 1972 and concluded in 1980. The role of the Faculty of Agriculture, Chiang Mai University in this research and pilot extension projects is outlined. Research was aimed at replacing Imperata cylindrica grasslands with pastures more productive for local cattle production. The origin and fate of the grasslands especially in relation to opium-poppy cultivation is outlined. Superior introduced pasture species were identified together with suitable agronomic conditions for the replacement of native grasslands. Cattle productivity was greatly increased. The acceptance of this technology in northern Thailand and elsewhere is outlined and suggestions made for future pasture/forage development in the northern Thailand highlands.
