บทคัดย่อ (EN): This paper elaborated the research and development efforts in restoring the almost extinct Thai native chicken (TNC) breeds. The overall aims of the R&D programs are (1.) TNC conservation (2.) Breeds utilization (3.) Technological needs for both sufficiency farmers and poultry industry (4.) To ensure food safety standards at free range level. The R&D schemes have been put into 3 phases. The first phase was the collection of the “breeds” with phenotypic characterization to make sure that they fall into the “specific” color theme. We have had 4 breeds : Pradu Hanngdum (PHD), Luang Hangkhao (LHK), CHE and Dang with enough animals to start the selection. The second phase was making genetic improvement, creating synthetic breeds and hybrid as well as consumer awareness and brand creation. The third phase was designing the various supply chain for particular types of products, product development and P-P-P through university engagement programs. The R&D covers far beyond genetics, breeding and selection. The challenges, stakeholders, stakeholder identification and key success factors were discussed. The research questions covered both the genetic conservation, and the contribution of these local breeds to the food security, farmer occupation and, last but not least, providing a “new” products to a new set of consumer.
