บทคัดย่อ (EN): In Ribbed Smoked Sheet (RSS) processing,there steps determine of the product quality, namely latex cogulation, smokind, and drying. Latex coagulation normally requires the use of formic acid, which is relatively expensive. Today, smoking is conventionally carried out by using rubber wood as firewood. This has several weaknesses particularly in controlling factors to influence smoking and drying process. As result, it would be difficult to keep the right concentration of smoke constituents, while optimal smoking and drying time are hardly to be maintained constant. It is also less practical as to keep the right supply of fire wood to produce proper smoke and heat according to requirement, including fire hazard, and the most important is air pollution of CO2 (amount is 46 % w/w of fire wood). Difficulties in control of smoking factors has led uneven smoking of RSS sheets, resulting in color variations that has affected the RSS quality. Furthermore, antimicrobial agent concentration absorbed by the wet sheets also varied, causing non uniformity in microbial sensitivity of the sheet pieces. The actual required color is light to dark brown, transparent and from mould. The most important factor in sheet drying is the drying air temperature. It is determined by the quantity, type of wood and dryness of firewood fed into the furnace. Temperature fluctuation in drying resulted in imperfect drying, and the rubber sheet is visible as white spots due to virgin rubber or “ case hardening’’ (sintering) and air bubbles allow to enter the sheets. The idea was to substitute the use of formic acid as coagulant and rubber wood as fire wood by using Deorub Liquid Smoke (DLS) produced from the pyrolisis of oil palm shell. It is expected that the processing time could be reduced from the normal 5-6 days to 1.5- 2 days and processing cost to be reduced by 10 to 20 %. The objective of this research is to find a new method in RSS processing by using Deorub Liquid Smoke (DLS) that is more efficient, faster and quality consistency, and environmental friendly. The experiment started at laboratory scale, then escalated in a cooperative/ farmer group and in a private RSS factory. The laboratory experiment consists of four kinds of treatments, namely: DLS as coagulant, DLS formulation with latex dilution to 12.0 % 13.5 % and 15 % DRC (dry rubber content) and the coagulation pH are respectively 4.8 ; 4.9 ; and 5.0 . The trial at private RSS factory in Banyuasin, South Sumatera, Indonesia was conducted by latex coagulation with DLS at thereconcentration: 60, 75 and 90 ml per kg DRC, followed by water dripping for 0, 12,15, and 18 hours, and drying temperature at 50 0 C and 600 C . The experiment performed at a farmer group in Banjar South Kalimantan, Indonesia had used DLS concentration of 75 ml per kg drc, the coagulum was milled using a hand mangle, followed by water dripping for 15 hours and finally and finally smoking in the smoke house for 36 hours. The observations were made for coagulation condition (pH. Coagulation time, coagulum condition and colour), drying time, TSR quality (Po, PRI and VR ), vulcanization characteristics [ minimum optimum (ML) and maximum torque (MHR), optimum cure (t90), scorch time (t2 ) and cure rate index], plus physical properties (tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus 500 % and hardness) The result of this experiment showed that DLS could substitute the use of formic acid as coagulant and rubber wood as fire wood (preservative) for RSS processing. DLS could coagulant and drying time of sheet only takes of 36 to 48 hours by using smoke or hot air, compared to formic acid required 120 to 144 hours. The higher latex dilution concentration (from 12 % up to 15% DRC )and the higher pH (from 4.8 up to 5.0) or DLS concentration (from 60 ml up to 90 ml /kg DRC), the faster coagulation process. Compared to formic acid, only at 15% DRC latex dilution that the coagulation faster than formic acid. The higher latex dilution concentration, the increase of PRI, but did not significant effect to Po and VR. The experiment in private RSS factory show that the best method use DLS for RSS processing is latex dilution at 13.5% DRC, DLS concentration is 75 ml per kg DRC, water dripping at least is 12 hours and drving temperature is 50 to 60 0C for 36 to 48 hours. The dark brown color of dry sheet can beovercame by the sodium metabisulphite(NaHSO3) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Flow chart of full this
