บทคัดย่อ (EN): With the sliding of petroleum price to record low, price of natural rubber has also fallen to less than US$ 1.5. Rubber planters and workers are facing serious economic crisis due to the low price and unemployment. Large areas remain untapped as cost of tapping is more than the return from sale of rubber produced. In countries where crop sharing is practiced in small holdings, tapping has become unattractive and harvesting remains suspended either throughout the year or in low yielding seasons. Because of the predicament replanting of rubber is reduced. Though many technologies were evolved in the last decade to address the low price of NR that prevailed in the initial years of the decade, the technologies could not be sufficiently extended or adopted. The situation is more so in small holdings. The present crisis is more serious and is expected to be so for many years. Since large proportion of Natural Rubber (NR) can be substituted by Synthetic Rubbers (SR) in the industry, steps by governments to procure and store NR may not be very effective in raising its price. Since large proportion of NR can also be substituted by SR, increased production of NR will not make any significant fall in NR price. To address the crisis of low natural rubber price, many changes have to be made in the cultural operations to make NR production profitable and attractive. Immediate changes in cultural operations like rain guarding of tapping panel and collection cup, Controlled Upward Tapping (CUT), Panel Change (PC) and Low Frequency Tapping (LFT) can make NR production profitable and attractive by increasing dry rubber yield and by substantial reduction in cost of tapping. Long term changes suggested are stopping of planting and replanting in marginal agro-climates and in places where NR is produced depending on costly labour, replacing rubber with of other perennial crops like cashew in marginal areas, limited replanting with oil palm in favorable agro-climates, planting of high yielding clones and latex timber clones, field planting of budded stumps instead of plants raised in polythene bags, hedge planting of rubber with wide inter hedge spacing for intercropping and mechanization of cultural operations of rubber, less production of RSS (Ribbed Smoked Sheets) etc. Latest data (2015 and 2016) on dry rubber vs yield of different clones on d4 and d6 tapping in base and high panels with rain guarding and stimulation in two estates in India are given.
