Synergistic effect of sesame oil and clove oil on toxicity against the pulse beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Chysomelidae)

บทคัดย่อ (EN): Synergistic toxicity of sesame oil and clove essential oils were investigated against the pulse beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) adults, through residual contact and fumigation tests. Different ratios of clove oil:sesame oil mixtures (10:0, 8:2, 6:4, 5:5, 4:6, 2:8, 0:10) were used for investigation. Insect mortality was determined after treatment at 24, 48 and 72 h. The percent mortality of insect were 44.00±2.45 and 46.00±5.10 after exposure to clove oil alone at 24 h by the residual contact and fumigation methods, respectively. These values increased to 48.00±5.83 and 62.00±3.74 after exposure to the mixture ratio of 8:2, whereas there was no mortality after treating with sesame oil alone in both application methods. It suggests that sesame oil showed the synergistic effect after mixing with clove oil at the ratio of 8:2 in both application methods. Synergistic toxicity was greater in fumigation than by residual contact application. The percent mortality of C. maculatus adults treated by the clove oil: sesame oil mixture (8:2) increased from 48.00±5.83, 91.56±4.12 and 100.00±0.00 after application by residual contact method at 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively. Those values were 62.00±3.74, 100.00±0.00 and 100.00±0.00 after fumigation by that mixture for 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively. Due to a low price of sesame oil as compared to clove oil, sesame oil could be an important implication in synergisms with clove oil to reduce cost of application for controlling C. maculatus in storage.
