บทคัดย่อ (EN): Drought is the major cause of historic and modern day agricultural productivity. Root angle distribution, which is regulated by the growth angle of the crown roots, is one of the root morphological traits used to determine the area of soil over which root capture water and nutrients. The objective of this research was screening the desirable root traits which have both deep root and shallow root system that is the one character for support tolerance to drought condition in lowland rice breeding program. In this research 135 F2 progenies from the cross of Paya Luem Kang (PLK) and Hom Chonlasit (HCS) were investigated the root angle ratio and total roots by using basket method followed 3D-root analysis by using RAG program. The results showed that the lowest deep root (DR) to shallow root (SR) ratio was found in F2-85 and the highest ratio was found in F2-48. The highest total roots (TR) was found in line No. F2-95 (116 DR:135 SR) while the lowest TR number was found in F2-69 in which the total root number was 40 roots. According to the present study, it can be concluded that the line No. F2-95, F2-100, F2-62 and F2-86 were optimum root number and had good in DR to SR ratio that had the desirable root traits which have both wide root angle and deep root system. In addition, the shallow root was dominated with deep root and the total root could be controlled by additive gene effect.
