บทคัดย่อ (EN): This paper presents the result of the study on the rubber agro-forestry systems research and extension efforts in Nigeria, with the aim of providing information to farmers and policy makers on the benefit of rubber based intercropping systems. Date were generated from research publication of scientists of RRIN working on rubber based intercropping systems and report of RRIN/CFC activities reports. The research result showed improved height and girth increment rates, there capable of reducing the gestation period of rubber and the growth and yield of component crops were not significantly affected by the system. The results also demonstrated that rubber intercropping leads to early return on investment and improved financial income to farmers. The extension efforts to popularize the technology was sponsored by the Common Funds for Commodities (CFC/IRSG 21). The project established 119 ha farmers managed rubber agro-forestry farms in 31 villages in 18 Local Government Areas in the five States. The agro-forestry option adopted by farmers include young rubber/arable crops, rubber/fruit trees and mature rubber/mini livestock. The rubber agro-forestry options adopted are based on economic, climatic, social and cultural value of the component crop/livestock. The participation farmers generated food crops yield for family food need and excess were sold for cash income to the families. For example, in Delta State, farmers made between N25,000.00 to 233,333.00 profits yearly from companion crops during the immature phase of rubber. This result motivate more farmers from the communities and beyond to establish their own farms. This result will accelerate the rate of increase in the national land area under rubber in Nigeria.
