บทคัดย่อ (EN): Biomass is an important source of renewable energy derived from photosynthesis in plants. Due to the lower contents of sulfur and nitrogen in biomass, using it as fuel emits less environmental pollution than fossil fuels. However, biomass utilization as a solid fuel still has many drawbacks due to its undesirable properties. Torrefaction is a pre- treatment technique to increase the calorific value and the grindability of biomass. It is operated at temperatures below 300 C in an inert atmosphere under atmospheric pressure. Densification is also another pre-treatment technique aimed to increase the density of biomass. In this study, the effects of torrefaction and densification on the properties and combustion behaviors of biomass were investigated. Leucaena leucocephala and eucalyptus were torrefied at 225,250 and 275 C in a fixed bed reactor. Then, the torrefied biomass was densified with a pellet mill. It was found that the yields of the torrefied biomass decreased while the heating values of the torrefied biomass increased with increasing the torrefaction temperatures. The heating value of eucalyptus, for example, increased up to 21.8% when torrefied at 275 C. It was also found that torrefied biomass at 250 C had the highest mass density of both biomass samples, which was 391.2% (544 kg/m3) for leucaena. The volumetric energy density of the torrefied pellet increased as high as 434.9% (11.3 GJ/m3) for torrefied leucaena at 250 -c and 422.5% (10.96 GJ/m3) for torrefied eucalyptus at 275 C. The hydrophobic characteristic of biomass was improved by torrefaction, which became more hydrophobic characteristic as torrefaction temperature increased. The char combustion rate of torrefied biomass also increased with increasing torrefaction temperature. It was also found that the combustion of biomass pellets had significantly longer combustion times, especially for char combustion.
