บทคัดย่อ (EN): It has been known that plants that could adapt to drought have osmotic adjustment mechanism by accumulating substances that could maintain cell turgor. Osmotic adjustment is one of strategy adaptation to water stress through dehydration postponement. Research results indicated that proline, betaine, potassium concentration increase when the plant experience with water stress. Also spraying of those substances could also improve plant drought tolerance. An experiment was conducted at Sembawa Research Centre glass house to test several substances known to be acting as osmoregulator. The experimental design was split plot with watering (full capacity, watering every two weeks, and no watering) as the main plot and spraying to leaves osmoregulator substances (control, leaves were sprayed with water, sprayed with betaine solution, sprayed with proline solution, sprayed with Potassium solution, and Potassium fertilizer applied to soil as much 2 x recommended dose) as the sub plot. The treatment was imposed on 2 whorls PB260 grown in polybag filled with 10 kg soil. The result showed that relative water content of plants with proline treatment was better than other treatments, and also biomass production was superior compared with others. Water use efficiency which was the amount of biomass produced per kg of water was found highest in proline treatments. The highest water use efficiency in proline treatment was mainly due to higher biomass production rather than water consumption. Better water status in proline treatment resulted in better growth and hence improve water use efficiency.
