A questionnaire survey was also done to identify how socio-economic conditions of people affect the decision joining a tuber society. The studies were conducted in the 3 major rubber growing districts; Kegalle, Kalutara and Ratnapura with 3 selected villages for the questionnairs survey and one village for the Participatory Rural Appaisal (PRA) in each district during the years 2003 and 2004. Results of participatory studies conducted in the Moneragala district during 2006 are also discussed in the paper. The place for rubber societies and individuals catering to the rubber sector in the study areas was below when compared to other rural societies. Participation in rubber societies was 40 % in Kegalle, 53% in Ratnapura and 33 % in Kalutara district. The satisfaction on the society was 28 %,44% and 32% . respectively in Kegalle, Kalutara and Ratnapura districts. There were 31% beneficiaries through involvement in sales by the society and 17% through providing technical know- how. The sex of the farmer and the extent of rubber lands owned by the farmer were found to be the main factors responsible for being members in the rubber society.
