บทคัดย่อ (EN): Background: Insecticide resistance in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes has been reported across Thailand. It can lead to ineffective prevention and control of dengue and Zika viruses. Objective: This research aimed to evaluate herbal aerosol spray against insecticide resistant strains of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes in laboratory and fields. Methodology: Six study areas located in Phitsanulok, Chumphon, Chanthaburi, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Ratchasima and Nakhon Pathom were chosen for the collection of Ae. Aegypti mosquitoes based on the report of insecticide-resistance in Ae. aegypti and dengue-risk areas. F1 progeny was confirmed to be resistant to 8 insecticides. The herbal aerosol formulated with 8.14% w/w of lemongrass oil, 2.0% w/w of citronella oil, 1.5% w/w of orange oil, 2.0% w/w of vanilla, 26.36% w/w of isopropanol and 60% w/w of gas was sprayed at 0.25±0.03, 0.5±0.03, 0.75±0.03 and 1.0±0.03 gram into the glass chamber containing 25 unfed females from the F1 progeny. For field evaluation, the herbal aerosol was sprayed at 1.0±0.1 gram to the six areas-caught Ae. aegypti adults that were kept in the paper cups with net cover. The mortality rate of mosquitoes was determined at 24 hours. Results: The results showed that spraying the herbal aerosol at 4 doses was significantly effective against the insecticide-resistant mosquitoes in laboratory. The mortality rates of mosquitoes were 4.5%, 54.0%, 94.8% and 100% when the herbal aerosol was sprayed at 0.25±0.03, 0.5±0.03, 0.75±0.03 and 1.0±0.03 gram, respectively (p<0.05). The herbal aerosol spray provided a 100% mortality rate of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes in the fields. Discussion: The developed herbal aerosol spray was effective against the insecticide-resistant strains of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes in both laboratory and fields. The herbal aerosol spray is a potential promising alternative to the chemical aerosol spray for the control of vector of dengue and Zika viruses. In addition, it will be developed further for more effective herbal aerosol spray product against insecticide-resistant mosquito vectors in Thailand.
