บทคัดย่อ (EN): Smallholders’ productivity varies between both among rubber producing countries and among smallholders due to various factors. This paper highlights the key factors that contribute to the productivity gap and discusses the various steps that could be taken to narrow the gap. Latex harvesting (tapping) is the most important activity in rubber production as it is carried out regularly for 20 to 30 years in the rubber planting cycle and determines the productivity level of the rubber trees. To achieve high productivity, smallholders need to acquire adequate knowledge on tapping techniques and related technologies through formal hands-on training. Smallholders should also have easy access to related publications and make use of internet facilities to acquire the latest information on rubber exploitation. Basic tapping principles are crucial for smallholders to be able to carry out correct and effective tapping operations. Knowledge on tapping principles, tapping tools, tapping systems, latex D.R.C., yield stimulation fertilization, tapping panel dryness and crop handling will guide smallholders towards the correct and effective implementation on latex harvesting operations. Tapping operations when implemented correctly will extract the optimum latex yield, sustain long economic life of the rubber trees and provide sustainable income. If good tapping practices are not followed, smallholders will suffer big economic losses and the rubber industry is shortchanged on its production potential.
