บทคัดย่อ (EN): The North East of Thailand is characterized by an undulating landscape where the lowlands were traditionally cropped with paddy fields and the up-lands covered with Dipterocarpus forests.During these last decades the up- lands have been severely cleared in order to plant cash crops like cassava, sugarcane, etc. Unfortunately this new land used had some very dramatic consequences on the soil and water quality: loss in soil fertility, erosion, and intensive recharge of the groundwater. The upriseof the water table jeopardizes the local rice cropping in the low lands as the groundwater is extremely saline (25 dS/m) and contributes to soil salinisation. As the demand for rubber is increasing, the planted surfaces grow in Thailand and reach now marginal areas where the rainfall is considered not being sufficient. This is now the case in the up-lands of North east Thailand where para-rubber is promoted and widely planted. This new crop should provide constant and important incomes for farmers of the poorest area in Thailand. Thought the rainfall does not reach 1300 mm/year, the presence of a shallow water table allows the trees to survive. This natural evapo-transpiration “pump” in the recharge area of the water table, may act as the previous dipterocarpus forest, and contribute to the draw-down of the saline water table in low lands. The massive introduction of rubber-tree in this area is a new land use for which environmental consequences are expected, and have to be anticipated in order to allow a sustainable development. Water seems to be the key issue for the success of this new land use, as it excess during the rainy season contributes to the groundwater recharge and salinisation in the low–lands, and to intensive soil erosion, but it eventual scarcity during the dry season may also be the limiting factor for the growth health and production of the rubber trees. A special focus has to be set on the water availability in such a system. However in order to take into account most aspects, a multidisciplinary research project has been set up to evaluate the influence of rubber tree on soil and water quality in a small watershed of 150 ha located near PhraYuhn(KhonKaen area).
