บทคัดย่อ (EN): The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of presence or absence of a CL at the beginning of the ovulation synchronization program on the ovulation rate and luteal characteristics in dairy cattle. At the beginning of ovulation synchronization program (day 0), ultrasonography determination was used to measure a CL in ovaries and to classify dairy cattle (cows, n=12; heifers, n=15) as the presence (CL+; cows, n=5; heifers, n=5) or absence (CL-; cows, n=7; heifers, n=10) of a CL. Soon after determination, all animals received an intramuscular injection of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and received a progesterone (P4) device. Five days later (day 5) dairy cattle received intramuscular injection of prostaglandin F2 (PGF2) and removed a P4 device. Dairy cattle received a second injection of PGF2 24 h later (day 6). Two days later (day 8) dairy cattle received a second administration of GnRH. Ovaries were scanned daily using transrectal ultrasonography on days 0, 5 and 8. For cows, the presence or absence of a visible CL on ovary did not affect (P>0.05) the incidence of ovulation in response to the first and second GnRH administrations. The proportion of cows having a visible CL at time of first PGF2α injection was less (P<0.05) for CL- than CL+ groups. The average number and size of CL on day 5 were greater (P<0.05) for CL+ than CL- cows. For heifers, the incidence of ovulation in response to the first and second GnRH injections did not differ (P>0.05) between heifers having or not having a CL. Although the percentage of heifers presenting a CL at time of first PGF2 administration did not differ (P>0.05) among CL- and CL+ groups, the average numbers of CL on day 5 were higher (P<0.05) for CL+ than CL- heifers. The average size of CL at time of first PGF2 injection tended (P=0.06) to be greater for CL+ than CL- heifers. In conclusion, the presence or absence of a CL on ovary at the beginning of the short-term progesterone-based ovulation program did not affect ovulation rate of cows and heifers. However, the presence of a visible CL at the beginning of synchronization of ovulation enhanced luteal characteristics by increasing number and size of CL at time of first PGF2α injection in dairy cattle.
