บทคัดย่อ (EN): In natural rubber production, latex flows out of the severed secondary laticifers by cutting the trunk bark of rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg) and is collected as the raw material for processing of rubber. Thus, it is difficult to distinguish the component traits of rubber yield for subsequent development of a technique for early selection of rubber trees with higher yield. The traditional selection of the high-yielding rubber trees takes more than 20 years, even up to 30 years, and it is hence time-consuming and low efficient in long breeding and selection programme. However, laticifers (latex vessels) and their latex regeneration are believed to be important components for high yield of dry rubber. The latex regeneration depends on the ability of secondary laticifer differentiation or the number of secondary laticifers that are differentiated from the rubber trees, and the rubber synthesis efficiency. In this study, the ability of the secondary laticifer differentiation which is explained by the number of the secondary laticifers was observed, and its correlation with the rubber yield was analyzed. Under mechanical wounding 1-year-old epicormic shoots of rubber trees were observed to have an evident difference in the ability of the secondary laticifer differentiation among the Wickham’s germplasm (the cultivated clones). The ability of the secondary laticifer differentiation could be roughly divided into four types: sensitive, additively sensitive, slow and additively slow. Of the four types either the sensitive or additively slow types occurred in most of the rubber tree clones that have a strong laticifer differentiation and are cultivated commercially. Under natural conditions the Wickham’s germplasm showed evident difference in their ability of the secondary laticifer differentiation at between the fourth and fifth whorls of the 2-year-old epicormic shoots. The germplasm that had strong secondary laticifer differentiation under natural conditions was generally hight in sercondary differentiation under mechanical wounding. Under test tapping the progenies of the crosses of the germplasm were obviously different in their secondary laticifer differentiation which had a significantly positive correlation with rubber yield. In this context the rubber producing ability of rubber trees could be primarily predicted earlier at the nursery stage within 3 years via evaluation of their secondary laticifer differentiation at these three stages. These data are important to develop a simplified technique for early prediction of rubber yield based on the data of the whole genome sequencing of rubber trees.
