บทคัดย่อ (EN): Systematic efforts on polycross breeding in rubber were initiated in India in the late 1980s recognizing the significance of maintaining genetic diversity in rubber plantations and the challenge faced by plant breeders to provide the rubber grower with a diversity of planting material without compromising on yield. This paper discusses the results of a polycross breeding programme that was initiated in 1989 at the RRII. Open pollinated fruits of 20 promising parent clones were collected and the respective progenies were evaluated in a nursery. The superior progenies were identified and 15 clones per progeny from 10 parents were raised in a field trial adopting a compact family block design. The 150 clones were evaluated for rubber yield, timber yield and related attributes. Out of 27 promising selections made from this population, 23 clones were promising with respect to rubber yield . The selections were classified as latex-timber clones, latex clones, timber –latex clones and timber clones. Nine latex- timber clones with 12.20 to 81.36 per cent improvement in rubber yield over the high yielding check, RRII 105 coupled with high timber yield potential, nine high latex yielding clones with 12.56 -47.07 percent yield improvement and five timber latex clones with high timber yield coupled with rubber yield comparable to RRII 105 were selected. These promising clones belonged to seven different progenies, the parent clones of which were genetically diverse. The most promising 12 selections in the pipeline, with estimated rubber yields of 2210 to 3254 kg ha-1year-1 are now in the final stage of evaluation in farmer participatory multi locational trials.
