บทคัดย่อ (EN): In the Philippines, rubber production is considered one of the most profitable agro-industrial ventures. This study assesses the latex production based on different factors such as diameter class and frequency of tapping and collection for sustainable production. It also seeks to develop an effective and efficient management of rubber plantation and to determine the safest mode of tapping in terms of frequency for optimum utilization. Healthy rubber trees of varying diameter sizes were randomly chosen in the site prior to the “shedding-off leaves” of rubber trees in the natural rubber plantation inside the Mount Makiling Forest Reserve, and ASEAN Heritage Park in the Philippines. A total of twenty (20) rubber trees belonging to four diameter classes were randomly chosen based on DBH and health conditions in terms of physical appearance. Based on the recommended minimum DBH for tapping (20.0 cm), diameter classes were: 20.1- 30.0 cm; 30.1-40.0 cm; 40.1-50.0 cm; 50.1-60.0 cm; and 60.1 cm and above. Three (3) treatments based on frequency of tapping and collection were applied to all rubber trees chosen namely: TR1 (daily tapping and collection of latex); TR2 (every second day tapping and collection of latex) and TR3 (every third day tapping and collection). Regardless of tree age, we found an increase in latex production with a corresponding diameter increase. On both ends of the age strata, the youngest rubber trees (20.1-30.0 cm DBH) and oldest rubber trees (60.1 cm and above DBH) recorded and increasing trend in latex production. Furthermore, among the three treatments, TR3 showed a stable and increasing trend in latex production while TR1 was the most damaging and can be detrimental to the growth of rubber trees as they stopped producing latex after 1 month and 2 weeks. TR2 showed a slight decrease in latex production but unlike TR1, rubber trees under TR2 are continuously producing latex. Initial results reveal that age is not a critical factor for latex production and TR3 showed the safest mode in terms of tapping frequency and increasing latex production. Thus, TR3 shows promise as a management approach for plantations to ensure optimum and sustainable utilization. Further and similar studies should be conducted to intensify the importance and use of rubber trees worldwide.
