บทคัดย่อ (EN): SITTIPONGPITTAYA, SOMDECH. University of the Philippines at los Banos, July, 1987. Leadership Among Rural Youth in Northeastern Region of Thailand. Major Professor: Dr.Pura T. Depositario The objectives of this study are: to describe the style of leadership among leaders of Tambol Youth Centers (TYCs) in northeastern region of Thailand, and examine if any relationships exist between leaders' personal backgrounds, group characteristics, group situations as well as, follower factors and leadership style. Respondents in the study were 30 chairmen and 90 members taken from 30 TYCs in three randomly selected provinces of the region. They were classified into (13) highly and (17) less effective groups (HEGs and LEGs) of the TYCs. Data were gathered using structured interview schedules and were analyzed using the chi-square, t-test and correlation coefficient. Thestudy revealed that the HEG and LEG leaders were similar in almost all of the personal backgrounds. They significantly differed only in training attended, membership in other social groups and position held in the social groups. Between leaders and followers of the TYCs, there were four variables of personal background which were significantly different. These were:sex, age, training training attended and membership in other social groups. The finding showed that there was significant difference in the manifested leadership style betwqeen leaders of the HEGs and LEGs. The HEG leacers tended to be task-oriented and those of LEGs tended to be relationship-oriented. In the analyses of the relationships of leaders' personal backgrounds, group characteristics, group situations as well as, follower factors and leadership style, only four variables were found to be significantly related to leadership style. These were found to be significantly related to leadership style. These were:training attended, membership in other social groups and position In the social groups of leaders as well as, followers' expectation. Comparing the differences between the manifested leadership style and the perceivec leadership style by followers as well as, between the manifested leadership roles and the perceived roles of leaders by followers, the results showed that these were not significantly different. Based on the study, training attended, membership in other social groups, position in the social groups of leaders and followers' expectation variables can be considered as the predictors of leadership style of the TYCs. Moreover, the findings revealed that where the TYCs had favorable group situations, task-oriented leaders were more effective in the initiation and administration of group activities than relation ship-oriented leaders. To increase the effectiveness of the TYCs, therefore, the leaders should emphasize task performance more than personal human relation. In addition, Increasing the attendance in training related to the roles of the leaders could enhance task-oriented leadership. Likewise, the leaders may be elected from among those who have more knowledge and experience in leadership as these would improve the effectiveness of the TYCs.
