บทคัดย่อ (EN): Rubber, Hevea brasiliensis is one of the main commodity plantation crops in Malaysia that has contributed greatly to the nation’s economy since last century. Most of the rubber plantations are in highly weathered soils, Ultisols and Oxisols. Improving soil fertility using basalt dust is a new practice on Malaysia. This paper will discuss on effect of ground basalt application on some soil properties, growth and nutrition of Hevea. Nursery trial has been carried out with four different levels of finely ground basalt (<0.1 mm), 0 g, 40 g, 80 g, 160 g and 240 g per polybag. Soil used in this study was Rengam Series yellow variant (Typic Paleudult) and Rengam Series red variant (Typic Kandiudult). After a year, soil sample and plant tissue were analysed for their nutrient content. The experimental design used for this study was the Randomized Complete Block Design with three blocks. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) of the data using the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) showed that pH and some macronutrients (P, K, Ca and Mg) in soil increased after 6 months and 12 months of basalt application. Application of 240 g per tree resulted in the highest increment of pH for red and yellow variant soils (from 4.2 to 4.75 and 4.76 respectively). Relative growth of Hevea in term of height and girth also increased significantly with basalt application. Highest increment was observed in highest rate of basalt application. Nutrient status of Hevea also improved significantly with basalt application. During soil sampling after 12 months, un-dissolved basalt was visually observed. From all data gathered, it can be concluded that basalt is a good soil amelioration and could function as a slow release fertilizer supplement for plant nutrient uptake in highly weathered soils.
