บทคัดย่อ (EN): This project was established in 2007 at the Research Outreach Station for Hilly Land Farming System, Marahan, Marilog, Davao City and in selected areas in Davao Region particularly in marginal areas with the objective of maximizing utilization of marginal land toward increased productivity, sustainability and self-sufficiency among smallholders particularly the IP’s to spur economic growth and social upliftment. Rubber based Farming System (RBFS) planting designs were showcased as follows: RBFS #1-3 meters between rows x 2 meters between hills x 21 meters between double rows (Alcala Design) with a population of 441 rubber trees/ha; RBFS#2-10 meters between rows x 2 meters between hills with about 500 trees/ha; and RBFS#3 – 7meters between contours (rows) x 2.5 meters between hills with a 570 trees/ha. Lakatan banana gave the highest cumulative income among the different intercrops with a return on investment (ROI) of 134% in two years from establishment of these RBFS models. Furthermore, with RBFS, establishment cost of both rubber and intercrops are recovered within first year from establishment compared to monocrop of which an income can only be realized 6th to 7th year from establishment of rubber. It was further observed that rubber has higher growth increment with intercrops compared to rubber grown as monocrop. The adoption of RBFS will depend on the land topography and landholdings. With regards to the selection of intercrops, this will depend on the location/adaptive capacity of the crops and the cultural management. Market value and demand should also be considered.
