บทคัดย่อ (EN): Rubber Research Institute of Sri Lanka (RRISL) is an organization, which caters to both smallholder and the estate sectors by means of developing appropriate technologies to increase productivity of the rubber sector. Low adoption rates were evident for many recommended technologies, especially in the smallholder sector, since their perceptions and problems are not always taken into account in recommendation of technologies. As a result, participatoy methods have gained a considerable interest among the rescarchers recently since these methods allow local people to present, share and analyze their knowledge of life and conditions to plan, to act, to monitor and evaluate the situations. This paper reports the findings of Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) carried out in the smallholder sector by means of various tools together with experiences and lessons learned during the past 5 years. Special emphasis will be made in this paper on effective extension planning through participatory methods with local people. Issue prioritization,decision making, awareness testing and extension need analysis are explained in detail together with illustrations with interpretations using appropriate statistical techniques.
