บทคัดย่อ (EN): Rubber trees were originated from Amazon basin, Brazil with rainfall between 2000 and 3000 mm/year. In Indonesia, rubber is grown generally in low elevation with rainfall between 1500 and 4000 mm/year. Due to limiting ideal land for rubber and also competition of land use with other crops, estate companies or farmers want to cultivate rubber in sub optimum area. Tidal swampy land area in Sumatra and Kalimantan is very large. The constraint may be faced in this area are low water table and soil pH might be extremely low due to the presence of pyrite layer. From field observation and research conducted, it was known that rubber could be well grown in type D with the depth water table was greater than 50 cm from soil surface and pH > 3.5. At high elevation (>500 m), the constraint faced was low air temperature that may reduce rubber growth. For every 100 m raise from sea level, the air temperature decline as much as 0.6oC. By using crop model, the girth decreases as much as 5.5% for every 1oC decrease from optimum temperature. The latex flow duration was anticipated would be longer at temperature of 18-24oC and therefore it was needed adjustment of tapping system. Rubber was also tried to be developed in dry areas. In Thailand, rubber was developed in semi arid area with rainfall less than 1200 mm/year and it is predicted that yield was only 75% from yield obtained from optimum area. The interesting phenomenon of rubber yield response to drought was the quick recovery of yield when the rainfall became adequate. Long dry season in 1997 reduced rubber yield as much as 210 kg/ha or 30% of total yield between July to November. Yield depression occurred only in the first three months then no yield difference during wintering and refoliation. Rubber development in area with dry month up to 6 months could be possible.
