บทคัดย่อ (EN): Major objective of this project was to develop process and prototype machine for continuous drying of natural rubber (NR) using twin-screw extrusion technique. In such a developed process, dewatering and devolatization of shredded-coagulated NR occurred in the specially designed barrel while controlling temperature profile, key-processing parameters together with using proper screw configuration. By these means, appropriate backpressure and shear stress could be created to effectively remove liquid water and volatiles from the NR raw materials. Based on many technical tests of development, the dewatering technology by twin-screw extrusion for an effective continuous process to produce very dry natural rubber with a volatile content of less than 0.2% by weight was proven. This volatile percentage appeared to be much less than those of other grades of standard Thai rubber, STR, (e.g., STR 5L) that commonly be dried using a hot air oven. Dry NR could be rapidly produced by twin-screw extruder within 1-2 min, justifying by the residence time from feeding the shredded-coagulated NR to dry NR exiting the die. Extruded dry NR was light clear yellowish and had uniform properties which met the basic property requirements of Thai rubber standard. To date, no similar invention on the dewatering of natural rubber via twin-screw extruder has been found, neither in Thailand nor other countries. Thus, developed prototype machine for producing good quality-dry NR in a continuous process is one of the key technologies to help strengthening capability of Thai natural rubber industry.
