บทคัดย่อ (EN): The environmental impacts and energy consumption for polylactic acid (PLA) and melamine coffee cup was studied by applying the life cycle assessment approach (cradle to grave). The functional unit of coffee cup was a cup used to contain 180 mL of coffee and in use for 2 years. It was assumed to be used 1 time/day. The results show that all impact categories of PLA coffee cup were significantly lower than that of the melamine coffee cup. GHG emissions of PLA cup was 603.00 g CO2 eq/cup and of melamine was 962.80 g CO2 eq/cup. The energy consumption of PLA cup (4.35 MJ/cup) was also lower than that of the melamine cup (8.96 MJ/cup). Abiotic depletion, freshwater aquatic and terrestrial ecotoxicity of PLA cup were 2.03x10 -3, kg Sb eq/cup, 1.99x10 -3 and 4.01x10 -3 kg 1,4DB eq/cup, respectively and of melamine were 1.03x10-2 kg Sb eq/cup, 1.20x10 -2 and 2.00x10 -3 kg 1,4-DB eq/cup, respectively. With the scenario that the disposal of PLA coffee cup was landfill without and with energy recovery, the GHG emissions through the life cycle of PLA cup were estimated as 1,627.10 g CO2 eq/cup and -186.69 g CO2 eq/cup, respectively and energy consumption were 4.35 MJ/cup and 3.16 MJ/cup, respectively. For melamine cup, the incineration without and with energy recovery was used as the disposal scenario and this resulted in the GHG emissions through the life cycle of 969.05 g CO2 eq/cup and 968.14 g CO2 eq/cup, respectively. The energy consumption were 8.96 MJ/cup and 8.95 MJ/cup, respectively.
