บทคัดย่อ (EN): A number of farmer level trainings were conduced in Jambi and West Kalimantan in 2004-2005 as part of CFC fundedSmallholder Rubber Agroforestry System (SRAS) project implemented by ICRAF. These trainings were aimed to enhance farmer knowledge and skills related to planting material, land preparation, planting, tapping, disease management, and group dynamics. A total of nine trainings in West Kalimantan and five trainings in Jambi were conducted for a total 671 farmers. A follow-up survey was carried out recently to assess farmers’ evaluation of these trainings and effectiveness of trainings on improving farmers’ knowledge and associated practices.Fifty respondents in West Kalimantan and 40 respondents in Jambi were randomly selected and interviewed in the survey. The results of the study showed that the two most important topics in West Kalimantan, as perceived by for sample respondents, were (i) technology of producing planting materials (38%) and (ii) management of rubber tree diseases (32%). In case of Jambi, the respondents reported that rubber tree disease management (38.5%) and rubber grafting technique (30.7%) were the most important topics. Following trainings, 89.5% of respondents in West Kalimantan have already applied new knowledge to producetheirthat own planting material while 62.5% practiced active disease management. Majority of farmers, both in Jambi (35.7%) and West Kalimantan (45.6%) wanted further training on rubber disease management. Among the trainees, 88% respondents had already communicated their knowledge to their colleagues in their villages and other colleagues. Establishment of group nurseries in the villages is one of the outcomes of the trainings. The survey indicated that technical trainings are clearly wanted, needed and effective in improving farmer knowledge and skills for improved rubber cultivation.
