บทคัดย่อ (EN): The process performance and greenhouse gases (GHGs) emission of the present wastewater treatment system in three natural rubber processing factories were surveyed in Vietnam. Two of their factories (A and B) which producing concentrated latex and standard Vietnamese rubber used anaerobic – aerobic lagoon system as wastewater treatment process. Another one factory (C) which producing ribbed smoked sheet installed an original treatment system consisted of combined anaerobic tank (CAT) and algal tank (AT). Final effluent quality of factory A and B achieved effluent standard B (QCVN 01: 2008/ BTNMT). However, it is difficult to achieve effluent standard A by present wastewater treatment process with respect to total nitrogen (15 mgN/L) and ammonia nitrogen (5 mgN/L). Regarding the power consumption for wastewater treatment, factory C had advantages from high organic removal efficiency by the CAT and no requirement of aeration for post treatment by AT. On the other hand, power consumption of the wastewater treatment in factory A and B was more than power consumption for natural rubber production process. Greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted from the CAT in factory C were methane and nitrous oxide. In the CAT, 94.4% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) was removed and 90% of removed COD was converted into methane. Also, 18.4% of ammonium nitrogen of the wastewater was removed with emission of nitrous oxide. As the results of conversion to carbon dioxide equivalent using a global warming potential of 25 and 298, methane and nitrous oxide accounted for 35% and 65% of total emitted GHGs, respectively. Therefore, development of appropriate wastewater treatment system with reduction of power consumption and GHGs emission for natural rubber processing factory is required. Also, it should be considered to reduce the amount of ammonia addition to natural rubber latex in the production process.
