บทคัดย่อ (EN): Natural rubber (NR) latex crepe rubber, the purest form of raw natural rubber produced by Sri Lanka, is mainly used for specialized applications such as food, medical and adhesives. Un-fractionated un-bleached NR latex nano-crepe rubber samples were prepared by incorporating aqueous dispersion of montmorillonite clay using conventional processing methodology. Retaining percentage of clay in the nana-crepe rubber computed based on the ash content was reduced with the increase of clay loading. Initial plasticity (Po), a raw rubber property measures the stiffness and thereby processability of uncured rubber of the clay filled nano-crepe rubber was not significantly altered in comparison to conventional NR latex crepe rubber. However, thermo-oxidative stability of the nano-crepe rubber, as measured by plasticity retention index (PRI), was severely affected especially when clay loading is above 1 phr. Low shear strain visco-elastic behavior of the clay filled nano-crepe rubber was evaluated using Mooney Viscometer to study the effect of clay on processability. Although viscous behavior of the nano-crepe rubber was not affected by the clay loading used in this study, rate of stress relaxation is increased, indicating the reduction of elasticity of the nano-crepe rubber. Nano-scale dispersion of the clay within the crepe rubber, as demonstrated with X-ray diffraction data, interacts with rubber molecules resulting in reduced elasticity. Tensile properties especially yield stress and modulus at linear visco-elastic range, of uncured nano-crepe rubber have shown a significant reinforcing capability of the nano scale clay, Results have been explained in terms of clay dispersion and non-rubber substances present in NR latex. Based on the addition of clay, novel clay filled NR latex crepe rubber was developed with improved processability and reinforcement compared to that of conventional crepe rubber.
