บทคัดย่อ (EN): This thesis presents the proposition that the implementation of a comprehensive nutrition intervention program within developing populations can be a potential factor or input for the economic growth and development of that population and can effectively serve national economic and socio-economic goals and priorities. The PROBLEM addressed is the difficulty in acquiring funding and support at the national level for nutrition intervention programs. The RATIONALE is that little study has been directed at improving advocacy by linking the potential benefits to national growth and development. The RESEARCH QUESTION then becomes: can such a linkage be demonstrated, and how? The conceptual framework suggests that nutrition intervention can affect economic growth and development via two pathways: a) an indirect pathway leading to a positive, qualitative effect on both economic growth dynamics, and on national economic and socio-economic goals and priorities, and b) a direct pathway leading to a positive, quantitative impact on economic growth via improved worker productivity and earnings. Noted implications include a vertical and horizontal multiplier effect and a positive effect on poverty reduction. The METHODOLOGY utilizes a mathematical model, applied to 3 historical and 1 current nutrition intervention programs in Thailand. The RESULTS show that the annual impact on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the combined interventions can be as high as 3.85%, including an allowance for non-intervention factors. The model demonstrates that the impact on GDP can be sustained and accumulative. Costs are estimated, based on Thailand's Ministry of Public Health cost figures, with the benefit/cost ratios reaching as high as 303:1 for the combined programs. Conservative 10-year projections show benefit/cost ratios of 7.78:1, 44.3:1, 60.2:1, and 164:1 for the individual programs CONCLUSION: Nutrition intervention can be a significant positive factor for economic development and growth. RECOMMENDATIONS suggest that there is a need for more research to clarify and add credibility to the relationships, and that there is an urgent need for both the nutrition intervention advocate and the central economic planner to realize the potential impact of nutrition on macro economic growth and national economic development.
