บทคัดย่อ (EN): A hybrid drying system was developed to dry sheet rubber, pale crepe rubber, brown crepe and skim laces separately or simultaneously. This system comprises two separate drying chambers and a single biomass fed furnace which generates hot clean air with a provision to collect hot smoke (flue gas) separately. Drying performances at different operational modes were studied. The drying conditions such as maximum drying temperature and optimum air flow rate were established for each operational mode. Raw rubber properties of the dried rubber were compared with those of the rubber dried using conventional drying systems. An energy balance was also carried out. The results showed that new drying system reduces the drying periods of sheet and crepe rubber against the conventional drying units by 20% and 33% respectively. Drying period of ambient air drying of brown crepe reduces from 7- 12 days to 3 days in the new drying system. For skim crepe, drying period reduces from 3-4 days to less than a day. The firewood consumption is reduced by 32% and 12.5 % against the conventional drying of RSS and crepe rubber respectively. Drying efficiency, in terms of energy was in the range of 20% to 26% for drying of rubber depending on the operational mode. Energy efficiency in the new dryer was 51% when crepe rubber and sheet were dried in it simultaneously. Raw rubber properties of the dried rubber at established drying conditions were found to un – affected. In addition, this system reduces the requirement of huge spaces for drying chambers and improves the working environment by preventing hazardous operational practices. Immediate change of the type of rubber being manufactured could also be possible in the new system. This allows to minimize the ill effects of price fluctuations of RSS and crepe rubber which is not possible in the presently available drying systems in the plantations as they are designed for drying of a particular form of rubber.
