บทคัดย่อ (EN): The global demand for natural rubber is likely to increase further and, in order to bridge the gap between demand and supply it is necessary to expand the area of its cultivation. In Sri Lanka, further expansion of rubber in the traditional rubber growing area is limited largely due to urbanization and industrialization. Therefore, in the expansion process of rubber cultivation, drier areas of the country were found to be the only option available. Under these circumstances, the feasibility for rubber cultivation in the eastern province was examined. Analyses on secondary data, interviews with key informants, site visits, agronomic and physiological assessments on initial establishment of rubber were made in the study. Soils predominantly with Reddish Brown Earth and Immature Brown Loams in the Intermediate zone in the Eastern province were selected for the initial cultivation of rubber. Growth assessments on tree development, physiological assessments on photosynthesis and the field establishment rate of tuber plants in smallholdings, warrant the potential success of rubber cultivation in this region. Also, land availability and farmers’ needs are also highly in favour of the cultivation of rubber in this region. Limitations available to the expansion process are also discussed.
