บทคัดย่อ (EN): Conventional type of training programmes receives poor attraction by farmers leading to wastage of resources. Therefore, the Rubber Research Institute of Sri Lanka has introduced effective modifications and changes in awareness raising activities. Advisory visits by extension workers are the basic feature of technology transfer but with varying degrees of success. This was transformed into a ‘farmer requested basis’ through a new extension strategy; viz. group advisory approach named ‘Vihidum Sathkara’ and has been in operation with a considerable success. Although some farmers are very much open to new ideas and technologies, some would like to see a working model before they follow the lead. To overcome this ‘wait and see’ attitude of the majority, model rubber farms have been established in all the rubber growing areas which is functioning successfully. This new approach was broaden by establishing ‘Pera Gaman Rubber Gammana’ – forward marching rubber villages – as a new concept for effective technology transfer coupled with marketing avenues. This paper also introduces how the information collected through Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) can be effectively used in planning effective technology transfer activities. Use of Geographical Information System (GIS) approach in extension planning is also discussed in the paper.
