บทคัดย่อ (EN): Various development approaches in the Thai and other highlands evoke lessons from diverse experiences. In this paper, such experiences are overviewed, with the specific case of the Thai-Australian Highland Development Project reviewed as an example. In particular, the need for sound understanding of local circumstances and informed research are confirmed as critical elements for sustainable highland development. Eight general lessons from experiences of the past 40 years are presented.
