บทคัดย่อ (EN): It was in 2006, when prices of rubber begun to increase in the global market, which our country took as an opportunity to revive the long neglected Rubber Industry, by launching the National Rubber Development Program (NRDP). The program aims to increase the area planted to rubber and gradually increase the average yield to meet the increasing demand for rubber, and improve the quality of rubber to meet the worlds standard. Traditionally, rubber is planted along the 15oN and 10oS of the equator, where our country and most of the rubber producing countries are located. In the Philippines, most of the rubber planted are found in Mindanao, whose soil and climatic condition best suited the crop. While the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) had identified many areas nationwide which are potential for rubber production. In fact, in MIMAROPA, acronym for the islands of Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan alone, around 686,831 hectares were identified with vast areas in Palawan and Occidental Mindoro. In this context, this research project was conceived to develop and promote rubber farming technologies especially in non-traditional areas, The Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) of the Department of Agriculture (DA) funded the “Development and Promotion of Rubber (Hevea brasiliensis Muell Arg.) Towards Commercialization in Oriental and Occidental Mindoro in 2008. The project was able to establish a Budwood Garden of five (5) National Seed Industry Council (NSIC) recommended clones of rubber, namely RRIM 600, USM 1, PB 260, PB 311, and PB 330; and a nursery that produced quality budded rubber planting materials which we shared with Nursery Operators wishing to establish their own Budwood Garden, and quality budsticks to plant propagators who wanted to bud their rubber seedlings. Notwithstanding, the trainings we conducted and distribution of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials interested farmers. During the growing stage of rubber at the budwood garden, PB 311 showed the highest height increment, while the PB 330 showed the highest girth increments. However, after one year, all clones showed uniform growth and performance on budstick production. Then, at this point in time, we are conducting a Clonal Adaptability Trials of Five (5) High Yielding Clones of Rubber in Mindoro. Five sites were established in Brgy. San Jose, Roxas, Brgy. Calingag and Marayos in Pinamalayan, Brgy. Ordovilla in Victoria, and Brgy. Masagana in Naujan. Additional sites are being validated. With this project, we had modestly contributed to the gradual increase in the rubber farmers becoming interested and had planted rubber on their farm and more nurseries started to establish their budwood gardens.
