บทคัดย่อ (EN): Background: Campylobacter is the major food-borne pathogen associated with human gastroenteritis worldwide. Retail poultry meat is a major food-related transmission source of Campylobacter to humans. The high contamination and increase in antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter has been posing a serious concern for human health. Materials and Methods: A total of 296 chicken meat and offal products were purchased from supermarkets and fresh markets in central Thailand during June 2016 to July 2017. Campylobacter strains were isolated and further identified species by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). All isolates were tested for susceptibility to five antimicrobial drugs using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test strip. Results: Campylobacter spp. was detected in 56.8% of the chicken samples. Multiplex PCR identified 67.2% of the isolates as C. jejuni and 32.8% as C. coli. Eighteen samples (6.1%) were contaminated of both C. jejuni and C. coli. Resistance was found to all examined antibiotics: ciprofloxacin 87.6%, tetracycline 53.2%, erythromycin 15.6%, clindamycin 15.1%, and gentamicin 5.9%. Fourteen isolates (11.2%) were sensitive to all tested antimicrobials, whereas 51 isolates (27.4%) showed multidrug resistance (MDR) against three to five antimicrobials. C. coli had an overall higher level of resistance than C. jejuni. Discussion and conclusion: The high prevalence of Campylobacter occurring in retail chicken products in Thailand indicates the potential risks to consumers. In addition, the remarkable antibiotic resistance and widespread of MDR Campylobacter spp. emphasize the need for adequate control approaches, including the prudent use of antimicrobials to minimize the spread of antimicrobial-resistant Campylobacter.
