บทคัดย่อ (EN): Rubber based farming systems can be defined as an integration of other crop/crops or animals with rubber. It can earn an extra income from rubber plantation and enhance land use efficiency. In China, intercropping in rubber plantation was practiced initially in 1950s, and came to the peak in 1990s. Recently, it has turned to be a new priority due to low rubber price. In immature rubber plantations, intercropping is a common practice due to availability of sufficient light, in such patterns as rubber/banana, rubber/pineapple, rubber/black pepper (Piper nigrum L.), rubber/sugarcane, rubber/vegetables, etc. In mature rubber plantation a few farming systems have been widely practiced with good income: (1) Rubber/coffee (for more than 10 thousands ha in Yunnan); (2) Rubber/AlpiniaoxyphyllaMiq (for about 30 thousands ha in Hainan); (3) Rubber/tea( for about 20 thousands ha in Hainan and Yunnan); (4) Rubber/chicken( for about three thousands ha in Hainan); (5) A new intercropping system for the whole production cycle in paired rows pattern (for ten thousands ha in Hainan in the future). For the paired row intercropping rubber trees are planted at a spacing of (4m ⋅ 2m) 20m with two narrow rows and one wide row for rubber clone CATAS 7-20-59. The planting density is 420 trees per hectare. Compared to conventional pattern (spatial arrangement: 3m ⋅ 7m), paired rows pattern has more advantages due to sufficient sunlight in the wide row: 1) Intercropping can be done for a long period and on large scale; 2) More crops can be intercropped; 3) Intercropping improves land use efficiency, increases income and provide more employment opportunities; 4) The wind damage rate is significantly decreased. In general, rubber based farming systems are still practiced in a very small area under rubber in China. They are mainly influenced by local socio-economic development, and climate and environment in rubber plantation. Hence, more rubber-based farming systems should be explored and released for extension as soon as possible in China.
