บทคัดย่อ (EN): The development of a uniform handling and storage standard procedure for Philippine rubber would be beneficial to its quality. Storing natural rubber in humid conditions and elevated temperatures leads to storage hardening in rubber, and its processability decreases accordingly. To be able to test storage of natural rubber in a faster and more efficient manner, the operation of thermal aging regimes that simulate storage conditions is examined. The effects of different thermal aging temperatures on Mooney viscosity, a processing parameter for natural rubber, and the gel content is examined. Blocks of Standard Philippine Rubber (SPR) 20 from three different sources, Philippine Pioneer Rubber Corporation (PPRC), MBH Trading, and Philippine Rubber Industries Association (PRIA) were subjected to thermal aging regimes at 70˚C, 90˚C and 110˚C and tested for Mooney viscosity and gel content using relevant ASTM and ISO standards. MBH rubber showed the highest Mooney viscosity at all temperatures ranging from 90-100 MV units, compared to PRIA rubber with 55-60 MV units. Mooney viscosity decreases as aging temperature is increased; this indicates that testing at higher temperatures breaks down cross chain bonding in rubber due to intermolecular forces or protein linkages. Measured gel content in MBH is highest, ranging from 30-69%, while it is lowest in PPRC rubber, ranging from 10-35%. Gel content analysis shows a decreasing trend in MBH and PPRC rubber, in contrast with PRIA’s increasing trend, when accelerated testing temperature is increased. Gel content in MBH is highest, ranging from 30-69%, while it is lowest in PPRC rubber, ranging from 10-35%. The decrease in gel content in the two sources is attributed to cross-linking bond breakage. Correlating Mooney viscosity and gel content found no linear trend. Differences in Mooney viscosity and gel content highlight different processing and handling conditions for each rubber and stresses the benefits of standards in Philippine rubber processing. In simulating aging at ambient conditions, it is found that lower elevated temperatures more closely relate to what is experienced at normal storage conditions.
