บทคัดย่อ (EN): Despite the social and environmental benefits of natural rubber (NR) cultivation, its financial sustainability has been threatened by prevailing low price of raw rubber. Hence, rubber production in most of rubber growing countries has dropped in recent past. Some of the rubber fields appear to be left without regular tapping for latex. As in most of NR producing countries, Sri Lanka experiences a move for cultivating other perennial crops such as oil palm, tea, cinnamon and pepper on the lands that were devoted for rubber. In addition to the overall financial advantage and agro-ecological suitability, availability of initial capital, ability to meet technological needs, access to labour, initial gestation period before harvesting, returns at maturity and management convenience are some other factors influencing the crop selection. With no proper record on crop comparison in these aspects, the present study was aimed to investigate the comparative economic advantages of other competitive crops (i.e. oil palm, tea, cinnamon and pepper) against the rubber cultivation. Estimates prepared for the cultivation of these crops in a RPC were collected and values were standardized through a discussion with planters. Lifecycle analyses for 30 years were performed using present market prices to assess the overall financial worthiness of different crops, average net income during revenue period, cost for crop establishment and payback period. At 10% discount rate, both rubber and tea showed negative Net Present Values (NPV); however, mean net revenue at maturity was positive with the values of LKR 113 and 235 thousands per hectare per annum in rubber and tea, respectively. Oil palm showed the highest NPV (over LKR 2 Mn per hectare), Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) of 2.2 and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 21%. Pepper and Cinnamon also showed reasonably high NPV and mean net revenue at maturity. Socioeconomic aspects and potential competitiveness of each crop are discussed.
