บทคัดย่อ (EN): The benefits of establishing mangrove plantations (R. apiculata) at Tambol Yisan, Samut Songkram Province in terms of carbon emission reduction potential was investigated during 2008-2009. Two aspects were considered: soil carbon and aboveground biomass utilization for charcoal production, which was then used for fossil fuel substitution. The carbon emission reduction was calculated based on the energy value of charcoal in replacing LPG. Plantation and harvest cycle around 9-10 years has resulted in higher level of soil carbon accumulation (50-70 tonC/ha), compared to the younger age of mangrove forest (<50 tonC/ha). On the other hand, the total average above-ground biomass was 9.29 kg/stem and 7.73 kg/stem for mangrove plantation of 12 and 9 years old with tree density of 7,100 and 10,125 tree per hectare. The average above ground biomass for 12 and 9 years old was 65.95 t/ha and 78.26 t/ha, respectively. Based on the averaged biomass of both years and charcoal conversion efficiency from field samplings and surveys, about 20.8 ton/ha of charcoal could be produced from this biomass. In the scenario that this charcoal is used for energy to replace LPG, mangrove plantation in Tambol Yisarn could substitute LPG of about 550 TJ per year (the colorific value of LPG is 50 kJ/gram and of the charcoal produced from Yisam area is 22.966 kJ/gram). If the IPCC CO2 emission factor of 1 TJ = 63.1 ton CO2 for LPG is used, mangrove plantation and charcoal utilization could help mitigate CO2 of about 35,312 ton CO2 per year. The results demonstrate that with mangrove plantation, additional benefits in terms of increasing soil carbon sequestration and reducing CO2 emissions from fossil fuel use could be achieved without additional investments. In addition rural life and coastal ecosystem could also be protected if proper managements are implemented. According to the findings, together with additional investigation on economical gain, social aspects, and other environmental benefits from mangrove forest planted for such purposes may help highlight the importance of mangrove plantation and its roles in conserving the coastal ecosystems.
