บทคัดย่อ (EN): This article examines the concept of an ongoing rubber-based Agroforestry system and outlines its impacts on livelihoods of rural people participating in the project implementation in Nigeria future of rubber industry. The aim of the project is to promote and develop economically viable, socially acceptable and ecologically sustainable rubber-based Agroforestry systems for farmers in West Africa (Nigeria). The Agroforestry project allowed a choice of location and species as well as provided the opportunities for intensive management and justification of investments in Agroforestry. Through Agroforestry systems, some indigenous high value tree crops, like bush mango, African star apple, and African pear, were identified, selected, propagated, and planted. Under the rubber-based Agroforestry systems, high-value tree crops and medicinal plants were intensively managed and they are grown much faster with the desirable traits. Climatic conditions for rubber and the high-value tree crops are particularly favourable in parts of the Northern and Southern Nigeria. Tremendous progress was made in the implementation of the project. The most remarkable activities covered all the six components. In component 1, the focus was chiefly on propagation and distribution of improved rubber clones (budded stumps) from RRIN’s central nursery to participating farmers. Young seedlings in the central nursery were well maintained regarding weeding, fertilization, pests and diseases control etc to ensure good growth and survival of the seedlings. In component 2, model farms were established and monitoring of the model farms established in 2010 in five states of Nigeria was carried out jointly by staff of RRIN and ICRAF. The team used the occasion to provide training and technical advice to the farmers. In component 3, medicinal plants were produced and integrated in mature rubber plantations of farmers in four States. Beehives were constructed, distributed and installed in farmers’ fields. Monitoring of field activities especially beehives that were installed in young rubber plantations in 4 states of Nigeria was also carried out by the team (RRIN and ICRAF staff). In component 4, farmers were selected at Otuo village in Edo State. They were sensitized on rubber Agroforestry system and work is progressing on field establishment in the village. In component 5, RRIN intensified efforts and built capacity for participating farmers. Except Kaduna State, farmers in 4 rubber growing states of Nigeria were trained specifically on Agroforestry and beekeeping (Management of beehives). In component 6, positive lessons and experiences from farmers’ fields in the five participating States of Nigeria were compiled for pasting on a project website for wider audience. The trend towards rubber-based Agroforestry would undoubtedly continue. It is driven by many forces: sustainability, viability, acceptability.
