บทคัดย่อ (EN): To meet the increase in demand for rubber within the country, the government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) has decided to expand the rubber cultivation to the conflict affected Eastern and Northern regions. Initial target is to cultivate rubber in 15,000 ha and Ministry of the Plantation Industries has launched an accelerated programme to meet the target within three years. GoSL has given the priority for these regions in providing the rubber planting subsidy. In addition to the rubber production, livelihood improvement by providing stable income to the peasant community is expected. This paper reviews how researchers were successful in establishing rubber in these regions, mechanisms adopted, limitations and future directions. Researcher led on-farm trials were used to refine the agronomic protocols suited for the regions. Identification of resources available and limitations and then planning for expansion was based on SWOT analyses at farmer perception. Analyses on rural livelihood and the assessment on crop microclimate led to identify the socio-economic and environmental impacts and also enlighten the policy makers on the importance of rubber cultivation. Instead of or along with seasonal crops, farmers use rubber as a means of obtaining permanent income. Income received from rubber has empowered farmers to obtain new amenities available under infrastructure development programmes of GoSL. Rubber canopy was able to provide comfortable environment to work with the reduction of air temperature and maintaining moderate level of relative humidity. Village centered expansion system was successful in Eastern region whilst difficulties in frequent communication has limited the proper adoption of rubber cultivation by the Tamil community in North. Lack of proper documents to claim the land ownership has also restricted the rubber cultivation.
