บทคัดย่อ (EN): Production of ethanol from lignocellulosic material is thought to be a good alternative to fossil fuel due to its abundance nature in a tropical country like Malaysia. The only concern being the most effective and cheapest method to convert these materials into biofuel. The conversion of lignocellulosic materials to ethanol was conducted on small branch sample of RRIM 3001 since the plant part can continuous be supplied throughout year by natural and manual pruning. It is also an excellent option during replanting because it is not harvested for any processing purposes and is advisable to be taken out of field as it can become nutrient source for root diseases pathogen. The study has looked into two kinds of pretreatment method, which employed dilute (1%) and concentrated (70%) sulfuric acid, three fermentation temperatures, 30oC, 35oC and 40oC, over 120 hours period of fermentation. The study has found the optimum method for ethanol production using dilute sulfuric acid pretreatment (1% concentration), fermentation at 35oC temperature and 120 hours fermentation duration, to yield 0.740 + 0.066 gram ethanol per five gram dry small branch sample. The ratio of holocellulose content to ethanol production was 1:0.36 (g/g), as opposed to theoretical maximum ration of 1:0.51 (g/g). This lower production of ethanol can be attributed from loss of ethanol through evaporation during sample handling and loss of fibres from adherence to filtering apparatus, which both can be overcome by using more appropriate GC vials for sample collection and using centrifugation technique to separate fibres and solution. Potential future studies will investigate the usage of different microorganisms for fermentation and different plant parts as source of raw materials, and formulation total cost of production to see the economic viability of biofuel production from lignocellulosic materials.
