บทคัดย่อ (EN): Background: The Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito is not only annoying at night, but also can cause lymphatic filariasis or elephantiasis. Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis (Bti) is a safe and efficient biological agent for the control of mosquito larvae. Objective: This study aimed to develop B–Soy starter for bio-larvicide production for control of Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito larvae. Methodology: B-Soy powder is a Bti starter produced by using soybean waste as raw material. Bti cells were cultured in a medium containing soybean waste and 0.85% sodium chloride solution. The cell pellets were dried at different test temperatures of 40๐C, 50๐C and 60๐C. The median lethal concentration (LC50) was determined against laboratory strain of Cx. quinquefasciatus larvae for optimal B-Soy starter. The most effective B-Soy starter was used for producing bio-larvicide at the different doses of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 grams and added with 500 grams of soybean waste in 5 L water-containing plastic bucket. Results: It showed that the B-Soy dried at 40๐C was the most effective with LC50 of 0.83 mg/l, whereas the LC50 of Bti dried at 50๐C and 60๐C was 161.23 and over 1,000 mg/l, respectively. The LC50 of bio-larvicide at the different doses of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 grams of the B-Soy starter was 0.075, 0.033, 0.020, 0.017 and 0.007 mg/l, respectively. Discussion: According to the test criterion of Biological control laboratory, NIH Thailand, the LC50 must be lower than 0.05 mg/l. Therefore, it should be used at least 10 grams of the B-Soy starter for production of the bio-larvicide. Bio-larvicide produced by B-Soy starter was safe and effective against the Cx. quinquefasciatus larvae with cheap and cost-effectiveness method at only 1.84 baht per bucket (5 L). It suggests that the B-Soy starter is alternative to chemical agents for the control of the Cx. quinquefasciatus larvae and for the prevention of lymphatic filariasis or elephantiasis.
