บทคัดย่อ (EN): Large tracts of idle lands in the region are found inside the ancestral domain areas. To make these lands productive, the Southern Mindanao Integrated Agricultural Research Center conceptualized the rubber development program. Convincing the Indigenous People to plant rubber was not easy because of their “To see is to believe” attitude. Hence, in 2007 the Research Outreach Station for Hilly Land Farming System was launched in a 50-hectare area within the ancestral domain of Ubu-Manobo and Matigsalug tribe in Marilog District, Davao City for the conduct of research and development on rubber and other upland crops. The program has two phases of which the Phase 1 projects were all established in the ROS for Hilly Land from 2007 to 2009 and promotional activities were conducted all over Davao Region. Project activities under Phase 1 include: Establishment of rubber budwood garden, rubber nursery, technology demonstration on rubber-based farming system, clonal trial, and Information, Education and Communication to promote rubber farming. As a result of promotional activities and the package of technologies shown in the station, the tribal members and smallhold farmers were encouraged to plant rubber. Hence, the Phase 2 of the program was crafted in 2010 to bring technologies in the station to the IPs’ and smallholders’ farm. This was done through the batches of long season training of which they were taught nursery management operation and crop establishment and maintenance. Using their new knowledge and skills, the participants were required to establish a hectare of rubber-based farm before graduation. In the same year, technology demonstrations were established in various sites regionwide. Now, the formerly cogonal area turn very productive and the farmer-adopters are enjoying the income from intercrops while waiting for the production of rubber. A total of 104 hectares have been planted to rubber in the project site since the start of the project. Furthermore, the development projects together with the IEC program conducted with support from Local Government Units (LGUs) have contributed a significant increase in NR planted area in 2012, with more than 1,200 hectares of new plantings.
