บทคัดย่อ (EN): This study was conducted in the major rubber producing provinces of Mindanao to characterize the socio-economic, agronomic and ecological conditions of rubber and document the farm practices as well as the profitability of growing rubber across ecological zones which included Zamboanga de Sibugay of Region IX, Bukidnon of Region X, Davao Norte of Region XI, North Cotabato of Region XII, Agusan del Sur of Caraga Region and Maguindanao of ARRMM because of peace and order condition. The study utilized the descriptive design, while the characterization of socio-economic and agro-ecological conditions of rubber in Mindanao used a pre structured interview guide. Ecological zones were classified as flat, rolling or undulating, and hilly areas. Profitability of rubber across agro-ecological zones was analyzed using costs and return analysis. Results showed that majority of rubber growers across ecological zones in Mindanao were male, married, with an average age of 47 years old and a household size of 4 to 6. Most of the rubber growers reached high school level and had an average annual income per hectare of Php 48, 304.00, with rubber as the sole crop planted in their farm. Majority of the rubber respondents financed their own farm, had not attended any related training courses on rubber and had more than ten years’ experience in rubber farming. The farmers followed the 15 day-tapping frequency per month and harvested an average yield of 0.40 kg of cup lump/tree. Moreover, the average age of the rubber trees was 15 years, while the average number of rubber trees per hectare was 433. The farmers started tapping when the rubber trees already reached six (6) years. Majority of the rubber growers owned a small farm size area which ranged from 1 to 3 hectares and below, with a temperature of 26-300, fine soil texture, moderate rainfall, and rolling or undulating. Budded rubber seedlings bought from nurseries were used as planting materials with cup lumps as the major product sold by rubber growers. Region-wide, the age, educational attainment, occupation and sources of financing rubber farming were significantly related to the income of rubber growers. Moreover, all agronomic and ecological characteristics included in the study, such as: number of hectares, age of rubber trees, clones, number of trees per hectare, soil type, temperature, soil texture, type of area, source, type of planting materials and age of rubber when tapping began showed significant relationships with the income of rubber growers. The most pressing production problems reported by rubber growers were as follows: low yield, low quality of the product, stealing of cup lumps and the non-availability of tappers. On the other hand, among the marketing problems reported were low price, poor farm to market road, low access to information and marketing system.
