บทคัดย่อ: การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อหาทิศทาง รูปแบบ และปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อการเจริญเติบโตของชุมชนเมืองจันทบุรี ซึ่งรวมทั้งชุมชนในเขตเทศบาลเมืองจันทบุรีและบางส่วนของเทศบาลรอบข้างที่มีชุมชนต่อกับชุมชนเขตเทศบาลเมืองจันทบุรี โดยศึกษาในช่วงปี พ.ศ. 2495-2545 และได้นำเอาระบบสาระสนเทศภูมิศาสตร์มาประยุกต์ใช้ในการเก็บฐานข้อมูลและวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ชุมชนเมืองจันทบุรีมีทิศทางการเจริญเติบโตไปในทิศทางตะวันตกเฉียงใต้มากที่สุด รองลงมาเป็นทางด้านตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ในขณะที่ชุมชนเทศบาลเมืองจันทบุรีมีทิศทางการเจริญเติบโตไปในทางทิศตะวันตกเฉียงใต้อย่างเด่นชัด โดยเฉพาะชุมชนมีความหนาแน่นมากตามสองฟากทางหลวงหมายเลข 3146 ส่วนรูปแบบการเจริญเติบโตของภาพรวมทั้งชุมชนเมืองจันทบุรีเป็นไปตามทฤษฎีโครงสร้างเมืองผสม คือมีทั้งระหว่างรูปแบบศูนย์กลางเดียวล้อมรอบรูปแบบเสี้ยว และรูปแบบหลายศูนย์กลาง ในขณะที่รูปแบบการเจริญเติบโตของชุมชนเฉพาะเขตเทศบาลเมืองจันทบุรีเป็นรูปแบบหลายศูนย์กลาง ปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อการเจริญเติบโตของชุมชนเมืองจันทบุรีแตกต่างกันไปตามช่วงเวลากล่าวคือ ในช่วงแรก (ปี พ.ศ. 2495-2533) ปัจจัยทางกายภาพ โดยเฉพาะโครงสร้างพื้นฐานทางสาธารณูปโภค เช่น ถนน ไฟฟ้า น้ำประปา มีอิทธิพลอย่างสูงต่อการตั้งถิ่นฐาน ในระยะถัดมา (ปี พ.ศ. 2533-2539) ปัจจัยทางเศรษฐกิจ ดยเฉพาะการตื่นตัวของแหล่งอัญมณี การเป็นศูนย์กลางการค้าอัญมณี มีความสำคัญมากกว่า ส่วนระยะหลัง (ปี พ.ศ.2539-2545) ปัจจัยทางสังคม เช่น ลักษณะครอบครัวเดี่ยว เริ่มมีบทบาทเพิ่มมากขึ้น ปัจจัยอื่น ๆ ที่เป็นปัจจัยร่วม ได้แก่ ปัจจัยทางการเมืองและนโยบายของภาครัฐ
บทคัดย่อ (EN): The objective of the research was to determine the direction, the pattern and the relevant factors of the growth of Chanthaburi urban, including the municipality and the adjacent areas, during 1952-2002. This study applied Geographic Information System (GIS) as a technique in database collection and data analysis. The result showed that the growth direction of the Chanthaburi municipal urban was mainly on southwest, particularly along the both sides of highway No. 3146. This growth direction was in an agreement with that of the whole Chanthaburi urban which expanded to the southwestern and southeastern parts, respectively. The growth pattern of the Chanthaburi municipal urban conformed to the Multiple Nuclei theory, whereas that of the whole urban area was a combination of Concentric Zone, Radial Sector and Multiple Nuclei theories. The direction and the pattern of urban growth were controlled by various factors, depending on different periods. In the period (1952-1990) physical factor especially terrain was most important. In the middle period (1990-1996) economic factor particularly the boom of gem and jewelry trade was more significant. At the final period (1996-2002), social factors, such as an increase in single family life style was most important. However, there were other fators, such as public policy affecting the urban growth in every period but were found reltively insignificant.
